The dream of exploring South America on a motorcycle had been tickling my mind for decades, but it took the loss of my job in the US and a move to Brazil to turn the dream into a project. It took quite a bit of preparation (and dollars/Euros) to get ready for the trip. Everything imported is obscenely expensive in Brazil (think twice the US price), therefore accessories and equipment were mostly bought abroad and “imported” in bits and pieces by myself or by friends who happened to travel to Rio from the US or Europe. Special thanks to Maggie, Werner, Ethel, Bernhard, Carsten, Sabine, Reinhard for all their help with orders and transport and to Celso and Bruno from BMRio Motorrad, who helped me get my 10-year-old BMW R1150GS in shape for the long trek.

This blog is a humble attempt to share some of my experience with family and friends. In spite of best intentions, I’m asking in advance for your forgiveness in the event of variations in the frequency and quality of my posts 🙂

ATTENTION: The very important chapter “EL CALAFATE AND THE BIG BANG” mysteriously disappeared from the February 2014 archive. I re-blogged it on April 30, 2017 to make it visible again. It should be the first chapter in the February 2014 archive. Don’t skip it – otherwise you won’t understand my unplanned temporary switch from two to four wheels.
